“So, why do you worry?” Matthew 6:28
“Therefore, do NOT worry!” Matthew 6:34
Power
Point:
Have you ever been worried about peace?
It sounds a little silly when you think about it, doesn’t it, but isn’t
it funny how we worry about not having peace?
Since the ultimate definition of “peace” is “No Worries!”, it seems
rather strange to worry about worrying.
As I was reading the Sermon on the Mount, it was blatantly obvious that
Jesus was making a point. His point? "No worries!" Don’t worry about what
you’re going to wear tomorrow. Don’t
worry about what you’re going to eat or drink.
Why? Because, as a friend of God, as a member of His family, He promises
to take really good care of you. In fact, He says, don’t worry about tomorrow.
Don’t worry about your health, or your finances. Don’t worry about what you
will have to say in a given situation. He says “Don’t worry about any
part of your life.” You are part of HIS kingdom now and there is no lack to
those who live there.
The funny thing is as I started writing this, I discovered that I had
been worrying about each one of those things.
I’m headed to Phoenix tomorrow to see my family there. I was worried about what I would wear, and
what I
would pack to wear for the “tomorrows” that I would be there. I was worried about what I would eat and
drink. I was worried about all the gifts
I had packed. Had I made the best
choices? Was there going to be enough room
for them all?
You get the picture. I went to
bed worrying, and I woke up worrying. I don’t like worrying at all. I think My
heavenly Friend has been trying to address that with me for a few days. Yesterday, in fact, the word He had given me,
was Job 22:21. It says, “Acquaint yourself with Him, (agree with Him
and show yourself to be conformed to His will), and BE AT PEACE; by THAT, (you
shall prosper and great) good shall come to you.” Not just “good”, but great good. Ah.
The thing was, I had forgotten that I had an agreement with Him. I have a covenant with Him. He is my Friend. He always treats me kindly. He always does good
things for me. The word “Acquaint’ means sit down with Him and “live friendly”. I have good friends. They really care about me and they let me
know it. They’re there when I need them
and I know that they would make any sacrifice to help me when I need help.
It’s a good thought to think of God your Father, as God your Friend
isn’t it? When you begin to point your
thoughts in that direction it begins to eliminate the temptation to worry
doesn’t it?
You could translate “DO NOT WORRY!” into “Take NO negative thought." In the Greek, it's actually a bit stronger than that. It literally means "DENY the thought.” That’s really a powerful admonition and it is
exactly what Jesus was saying to us.
DENY the thought that you won’t have
enough.
DENY the thought that you won’t know
what to say or to do.
DENY the thought that God won’t be
good to you.
During the holiday season it’s often easy to slip and slide down the
slippery slope of accepting worrisome thoughts. Don’t do it. Stop it. Stop it NOW. It’s your job to remember that God is who He says He is. He is your Friend. He is your source. He is your companion. And He’s got your best
interests at heart. Begin to declare the things that He’s promised you and they
will be established FOR you, BY Him.
When you know that, peace will come.
That’s what Jesus was saying, “God is
establishing His goodness in your life. You don’t need to worry about a
thing.” So don’t.

I have calmed and quieted my soul. Psalm 131:2 |
Deny worry the opportunity to steal
the blessings God has planned for you today, and especially tomorrow.
